creating a childrens collection
Their inquisitive and colourful approach to design made Vera & Kyte the obvious choice when Heymat came up with the idea of developing a children’s collection. We have visited Vera & Kyte in their studio in Bergen to learn more about the design process for Wildlife
What was your motivation and point of departure for designing a children’s collection?
While developing the Wildlife collection, we shared a vision with Heymat to make designs that emphasised curiosity and playfulness.
We believe that a colourful collection with visual complexity will stimulate these qualities in children by giving them a world to explore and a story to discover.
What inspired the design?
Nature is an unlimited source of inspiration that provides countless opportunities for discovery and creativity. The Wildlife collection was inspired by Norwegian fauna and portrays animals in their natural habitat.
“The rich and complex range of colours in each palette makes it easy to choose matching colours for walls, textiles, lamps or other interior design details.”
Has it been challenging to design for children?
Striking the right balance between playfulness and elegance was particularly important in the process of developing a children’s collection. The designs navigate this landscape with bold colours and sophisticated palettes in combination with motifs somewhere between realism and fantasy.
Which children’s rooms do you envisage Wildlife fitting into?
While developing the Wildlife collection, we carefully considered how the mats could contribute to creating a dynamic and inspirational interior palette for children’s rooms. The three mats have very distinctive colours, and the idea is to make it easier to find a mat that is compatible with existing elements and personal preferences. The rich and complex range of colours in each palette makes it easy to choose matching colours for walls, textiles, lamps or other interior design details. In this way, a vibrant and colourful room will still have a harmonic and consistent appearance.
